Apprehensive

Talked to both mom and Matt tonight and I think they are quite nervous about coming to Red Deer. Not the trip itself, but being away from home. However, I think once they are here and Matt being able to work out everyday will help in the long run.
Last Monday Matt was able to visit with the fellow from Saskatoon again. His dad and him went hunting but never got anything.
Matt has been going to the Golden Age quite often and enjoys playing cards with the men.
Wednesday they travelled to Melfort for rehab. The physio therapist working with Matt has family from Somme. His dad actually lived 4 miles away. What a small world. Matt was at rehab for 2 1/2 hours and felt he did really well. First on the agenda was the sit/stand machine. However it was not the right kind so it was a bit more difficult but Matt was still able to stand for 10 minutes the first time and 5 mins the second time. Second thing the PT worked on was rolling on the mat. Trying to strengthen Matt's core muscles so got him to lay on his back and put a small roll under his knees. Then Matt had to try and lift his bent leg up while keeping his stomach muscles tight. Matt's right leg is much sronger so was able to do about 10 reps. The left leg he was able to do almost 5. Very hard exercises for anyone. Worked out on weights as well and tried a new exercises again involving core strengthening. Sat Matt on a special cushion which helps stabilize him. But they wanted him to move back and forth to put him off balance so his body would try to straighten him out. By the time the left he was exhausted. Just wish his left arm didn't pain him so much. Please pray for improvement in the shoulder and arm.
Saturday Matt had a great massage. A girl he went to school with comes home every three weeks and brought her massage table with her so Matt was able to lay down on his stomach for 1 1/2 hours. Felt great. Hasn't laid on his stomach for that long since before his accident.
Tonight company came over to visit and wanted to help Matt stand. It was awkward and not the prettiest standing maneuver, but it wasn't bad. Thanks for helping! Any exercise Matt can get is great. Quite tired tonight when I talked with him so couldn't hold the phone for long. Still getting stuff ready for them when they come to Red Deer so have to sign off. Thanks again for those who continue to read the blog and pray for Matt's recovery.

Busy Week

Matt travelled to Melfort on Tuesday for his first stint of rehab since leaving Parkridge. However, it was mostly an assessment to see what Matt's capabilities and limitations are. The therapist was quite encouraged but what she saw, but will need to see if she can get some equipment to aid in his recovery.
Matt went to a outside barbecue on Friday night, which was for the Big Sky workers. He had a great time, however dad was with him and was getting quite cold so they decided to leave. That is probably a good thing since Matt can't feel the same way we do and tends to underestimate how cold he is, and then is so stiff in the morning he can hardly move at all.
Bradon Kipling was over for the weekend and him and Kristen took Matt to the Weekes Hotel for supper on Saturday. Always nice to have friends come over.
Today mom and dad were able to get Matt to the floor using the lift and tried to do some "mat" exercises. However Matt is still on the antibiotics and needs to take gravol for the nausea, so still not feeling great and was pretty tired. He has been up in his manual chair for 2 days now, practicing moving it with his right hand and left hand(but actually the movement comes form his left shoulder) which makes his neck hurt. Good exercise though. Really tired himself out this afternoon. He had been playing Wii for 1 1/2 hours playing Wii Sports (bowling, golf, baseball) so he needed mom to prop the pillows so he could hold the phone! Good rehab tool.
Last week Matt was able to meet with the fellow quad when he came to hunt with his dad. He is returning sometime this week as well, so Matt will visit with him again.
Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit".

Still in Weekes

Goes "uptown" to Golden Age to play crib with the men. I think Matt likes to be home but is difficult for him to do too much in ways of extra curricular activity. Matt met a fellow quad in Saskatoon when Matt was still in City rehab. He lives in Saskatoon and comes to Weekes to hunt every year. He can wheel himself around so is not a full quad. He was supposed to go to Beijing for the Olympics for rugby but felt he was too old. However he had went to Australia and Athens for the paralympics. He will be up to hunt next week so it will be nice for Matt to have a visit.
Still has urinary tract infection and it is now a new strain so has to go on a different antibiotic. Has been very stiff from lack of exercise and mom has been working. It is so hard to do any standing with only the two of them and no standing frame. Looking forward to coming to Red Deer in the near future. Matt's neck is hurting all the time so when he is here we will try our LILT, low intensity light therapy on him. I was having trouble with my hip for 3 years and had two therapy sessions and now I am running again, so hopefully Matt will have the same success.
I will probably write the blog every week now until Matt gets to rehab, unless something exciting happens. Thanks for all of you who continue to read the blog and for your continued support of Matt.

Happy Belated Mom

Sorry the blog has been so long in coming. We are still in Fairmont B.C. and the Internet is not the best but will try to do the blog again. Has been cutting out and losing my info.
As everyone might have guessed, Matt is official out of Parkridge in in the care of mom and dad at home. Matt has improved with doing self catheterizations that he can almost do it himself, just needs some help for the set up. Before he left Parkridge, they discovered he has 4 kidney stones while doing a cystoscopy. They will need to blast them, or do lithotripsy. Not sure when that will happen.
On Wednesday Matt stood with the Argyl and mom was making sure she had everything to take Matt home. Part of Matt's therapy was wheeling himself to the rehab department.
Thursday Matt really stood well for 25 min. Krista, the nurse from RUH was there and I think that is a good motivator for pushing himself to the limit. Unfortunately/fortunately that is a Gustafson trait and we love to do well in front of an audience!! He also got a massage as well from the massage therapist.
Mom was quite excited to hear that there is a Project Walk in Victoria and will definitely look into that. Barry and Gisele are living there now and would be great to go somewhere where there is family.
Can't wait until the troop makes its way to Red Deer, hopes everything works out for the best. Prayers that Matt will continue to improve and that sometime in the future he will walk on his own.
Happy Birthday Mom for August 30th. Love you lots!!

Our family is off to Fairmont for a week, and we are leaving in 10 mins,so I am told! So better hurry up.
Matt continues to progress in rehab, however slowly.
Thursday he did the slings on the mat again. Also had OT therapy with the group, usually arm exercises and upper extremity.
Friday Matt worked in the evening and we spoke quite late.
Saturday Matt had plans to go in his manual chair and do a spin around the atrium, however he only managed to do about half. Starts to feel dizzy, like he has exercised intensely and then his body is trying to recuperate. Eyes get hazy and feels exhausted. Matt, it is a heavy workout for you and still must build up slowly.
Sunday Matt was in the manual chair again, then was in his electric chair by 4 pm because dad had to leave early to wash Matt's dirty clothes. If Matt stays in his manual he needs someone to push him when he gets stuck.
Mom should be back today sometime.
Have a great week if I don't write again. will try to get internet while we are away. Need to beat Matt in Sea Battle, which I seem to continually lose at.

Monday Matt finally had another haircut. he was starting to look like the shaggy dog! Monday he also worked in group doing upper extremity work and pulleys. That was about the extent of rehab because he wasn't feeling well.
Tuesday Matt was supposed to go on the Argyl but something got screwed up so instead he showed the new therapist how far he could push himself in his manual wheelchair. Matt estimated the distance at 200 feet. It took him along time and had to stop a few times. He was so tired that after lunch he went to sleep and didn't wake up until 4 pm! Good workout Matt! I asked how his shoulder was feeling afterwards and said it wasn't too bad, so thank you Lord for answered prayers.
Today Matt was able to get up in the argyl machine, or the sit stand for about 3-4 mins, however he had to sit down due to his fall in BP, 80/48. He didn't feel that bad and his O2 level was at 99%, but they decided not to push it. Matt finds it easier to breathe in the sit stand machine as opposed to the standing frame. The frame has a strap that goes around his chest and he can't take a deep breath. His lungs are still not what they were before being on the ventilator and so still does his deep breathing exercises to strengthen his lungs.
I was laughing at him tonight on Skype because he lifted up his left hand with his right hand so I could look at it. It looks as black as the ace of spades! His right hand is more a normal color, but his lack of mobility and all the edema he had while in ICU has changed his pigmentation. Anyone who has seen Matt will know what I am talking about.

Birthday Weekend

A celebrating weekend for the Gustafson clan. Yesterday was dad's birthday and today is Shaunie's 4th birthday so all excited. She doesn't quite understand it is her birthday and trying to work on telling her she is 4 but didn't have much luck with the 3rd one either. High of 30 degrees today so will be melting.
Matt has been busy with his argyl exercises, strengthening his quads, bending his knees, and using his arms and back to help him stand as well. He said everyday he does well but on Friday was doing his exercises and got dizzy after a few reps.
Thursday Matt had his bone density test. They wanted to see if he had lost any bone mass due to lack of weight bearing exercises. However they feel he hasn't lost any so that is good news if he wants to go to project walk. Mom also left on Thursday to go back to work. Of course she is always working, but this job she gets paid for!!
God bless everyone on this beautiful Sunday!

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Just talked to mom while she was on her way to get a sub from Subway, the big baby. Unfortunately when he comes to Red Deer after he is discharged from Parkridge he will have to put up with my cooking!
On Friday they tried something new on the sit stand machine. Before they would put Matt almost to a standing position and then have him use his legs to get him to full standing position. Now they make him do a partial squat, or bend his knees so his bum goes down. It is much harder but Matt really tries hard. He also does it with no brace on his left leg, which is getting stronger.
Monday Matt had group therapy at 10 am. Then practiced on the sit stand machine again. They don't really time him anymore, because he is doing the squats to strengthen his quads.
Today they tried a sit stand machine they were hoping to send Matt home with but he is just too big, so they will have to order one and then Matt will pay for it. The cost is $6000 and insurance will cover about $2000. They also want Matt to purchase a special $4000 mattress to prevent bedsores as well, but the new manual wheelchair costs around $8000,so have to hold back on something for now.
He wasn't feeling that well today, his shoulder really bugs him when he tries too hard at rehab and then he doesn't sleep well. But he still did really well in rehab and they had him on the mat. They wanted to see if Matt could move his left leg without the resistance of his right leg. Difficult to explain but I will try.
They get Matt to lay on his right side. Then they attach him to 3 ropes suspended from the ceiling and have slings on the end. The first goes under his thigh, the second under his knee and the third goes under his ankle. Then they pull on the ropes to suspend his left leg above the right, while laying on his side. Matt has to then try and straighten his left leg and then bend his knee, after he must try leg curls, and finally he works on the ankles, which is the hardest one of all. It is still slow, he can push down with his toes but not pull them upwards. They tried the same thing on his left arm with little success.
We are all still rooting for you Matt and pray everyday God will give you the strength to continue on your journey. 2 Samuel 22:33-34 "It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights." You will get there Matt, we believe with all our hearts.

Rehab Continues Forward

Talked to mom and Matt on skype on Thursday. Mom was trying to tell me about Matt's rehab and he kept putting on the Sea Battle game! It was very hard to concentrate on what mom was saying with all the winning (by me, of course)!
However Wednesday Matt did some exercises on the mat and was quite impressed with himself. He was on his belly and the situated his arms and elbows just right underneath him and he held himself up for 10 mins! Great work Matt, but be careful, because he ended up hurting his shoulder again. They think alot of his shoulder pain stems from his neck so I am hoping when he comes to Red Deer again, we can try a new machine we got at the office called a LILT machine, or low intensity light therapy. Works to stimulate increase in cell permeability to increase healing time, to put it in very simple terms. Worth a shot. Anyway, he also practiced some rolling exercises and did the arm bike for 15 mins, but feels very tight in his shoulders.
Thursday was on the mat again and tried holding himself up while sitting. You must put his left hand in the right position and he can do pretty well. They are trying to get his to sit by himself. Matt worked on the pulleys and did great. However they were giving him heck because he is supposed to do stretching exercises first thing in the morning but he stays up so late and sleeps in, so Matt, wake up call in our house will be earlier than you like, but just imagine you are training for the Olympics, with a gold medal for you when you walk again. Which you better start doing soon to work off some of that weight you have gained, 193 lbs. So great to see you regaining your strength and appetite.
Mom had briefly mentioned how great Matt did in rehab on Friday but was unable to speak to her long and so unsure what Matt did, but will find out tomorrow.
Continue to pray for Matt's shoulder and neck, and to allow them to heal and so progress can continue.

Long Weekend is Over

It feels like a tornado has hit and the aftermath has set in! Thank goodness for dad and mom to help restore order!
It wasn't really that bad and we had great weather with lots of beanbag games, with Shauna and I capturing the B side win. And I know because there are pictures to prove it! And Giselle and Brett won the A side, but I think the whole affair was rigged!
So great to see everyone and thanks for all the help. Matt has improved so much since he was here in May. If he really concentrated and was feeling good, he could bend his left elbow!! Also he is so much more easy to transfer. Uncle Jim made this amazing transfer board that is just perfect for Matt and I could almost transfer him myself. He is much stronger when he sits up and can balance himself a bit with his right hand. We were not able to do as much as we would have liked to but it was so busy with all the family that it was just nice to visit with everyone and sit by the campfire. Matt of course was the last one to bed most nights and that meant mom and I were also the last ones to bed. However Matt would sleep in to 11 am and I would be up by 8 am, so next time I will wake him up at 8 am!!
Matt returned back to Saskatoon on Tuesday and will be discharged from Parkridge on Aug. 29th, so getting things ready for the possibility of him coming here for a few months. We will see what happens so please pray for guidance on what would be the best for Matt.

Travelling to Red Deer

This will be a short blog, getting ready for the reunion!
Tuesday Matt dressed himself, shirt over his head and able to get both arms in but unable to pull it down the back. Had company in evening and also did some mat work.
Wednesday had physiotherapy with the sit stand machine. Matt also tried the cycle machine, the one he sits on and can move with either his legs or arms. He didn't do that well and was a bit disappointed but on Thursday the therapist adjusted the seat so he was sitting more upright and then he could really go!! He told me he went the length of the driveway in Weekes! Totally exhausted after that. I should think so! Great work Matt! Maybe we will have to look into buying you one of those!
So today they are on there way here so looking forward to seeing how much he has improved. It is always a treat.
Happy Long weekend to everyone and prayers for everyone's safety.

Happy Belated Nolan!

Just wanted to give a quick update. I was unable to speak with Matt last night because he had company and couldn't tell me about the days events.
Saturday dad returned to Saskatoon to be with Matt. The weekend was uneventful and didn't have to much to report.
Monday Matt was able to go into the pool. He was able to go onto his knees and then move himself back and forth while on his knees. Not just swaying back and forth, actually moving his right knee outwards, then bringing his left knee to where the right knee had been. So much easier under the water. Also did some leg swinging exercises under the water when he was standing.
Had some group occupational therapy and worked on strengthening his right hand with putty and doing arm exercises. Was up in his manual chair for the exercises but still having trouble with his shoulder and neck being so sore. But he said it is more tolerable now and can do some of his exercises so praises that it is improving.
Getting ready for the big trek to Red Deer on Friday. Mom is done work on Thursday and will be in Saskatoon Thursday evening. So hopefully get an early start to get here early. Need dad to cut the grass!!
Just wanted to wish Nolan a Happy Birthday yesterday and also a happy birthday to cousin Shauna, who is ??? I will not reveal her true age because then she would reveal mine!
Thanks to all the faithful readers, even though it is difficult during this busy time of year to keep up with the updates. Will hopefully give an update on the week by Thursday evening.

2 days not so good

Rehab has been a bit slow this week. Since Wed., Matt has been feeling lousy. Tried to do some standing exercises and BP dropped to 70/46. So was unable to go on his big outing. Not so good. Same thing happened on Thursday, so had to stay in his power chair. However he did have a bath which I can always tell because he is so nice and shiny!
Today he was feeling more like himself. This morning did some self care and discovered if his shorts are on the top of his lower legs, he can do a bridge by himself and pull the shorts the rest of the way. Feels like he is getting stronger with that. The therapists also got him in the sit/stand machine and just put the waist support on, not the butt support sling. They wanted to see if Matt could sit on an actual toilet, which he did. Hasn't done that for over a year but he said it didn't seem the same, he didn't have an Archie book with him!
Matt feels his shoulder is getting a bit better. When they got him on the mat on his tummy, they positioned his arms just right and was able to support himself quite comfortably, just like a kid laying on the floor watching TV.
They also tried the TENS machine on his left quad muscle to help him lift they leg while sitting in the chair. He could then hold it extended for 5 secs, which he proceeded to repeat the exercise for about 5 mins. So about 20 reps or so. His right leg doesn't need the stim machine because he can already lift it fairly well.
When I asked Matt how the left hand and arm was doing, he explained it like this: it feels like there is a heavy book on top of it and he doesn't have the muscle strength to lift it. With the right hand, even though he has lots of movement, it feels like it is underwater and there is always a weight on it as well. But just watching him on SKype, the movement is so much more fluid and he can lift his right arm so much higher over his head. So KUDOS to you Matty!
It is so encouraging to hear and see improvement all the time. So many people in your same situation are so discouraged about lack of improvement, or no improvement at all. With Matt, every achievement is meet with optimism and hope from not only Matt but the rest of his cheering squad.
1 Chronicles 16:8-9 "Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts."

Shoulder Feeling Better

Well Matt shoulder isn't any different but they are giving him enough meds to numb the pain so he can be comfortable. Praise to God that it is feeling better.
Thursday Matt had a CAT scan on his bladder and kidneys to see if there were any more stones. His kidneys were clear however he has calcium deposits in his bladder. Should be fine. Pain is when it goes through the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder. Friday not too many therapists around so did some mat work. On the weekend Matt was supposed to watch some ladies fastball. They got to the diamond at 6 pm, payed the entry fee, just got under the bleachers when it began to rain. It rained and rained, then it began to hail. You couldn't even see the ball field it came down so hard. Then after the rain they went home, the game was cancelled. It was an expensive rain to watch!!
Sunday Matt went on an outing to the forestry farm and was able to see two baby Siberian tigers in a cave.
Monday Matt had OT therapy, really worked on his neck and arms. Lots of stretches and practiced doing dips in his chair. He goes from a sitting position and bends at the waist to try and touch the floor, then sits himself up again. Did really well. Strengthening his stomach muscles. Tried to do some standing but got really dizzy. They know it is from not standing enough, should be standing everyday but will try for at least twice a week.
Matt is excited about an outing he is going on without mom or dad (dad actually went back to Weekes on Sunday) and only with his therapist. She/he is taking him to the Midtown Plaza on Wednesday. He is always worried that he will need to be catheterized so is a bit apprehensive but prayers the trip will go smoothly.
Continue to pray for improvement in Matt's conditiona and shoulder. Psalms 5:1-3"Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

Prayers for Shoulder

Matt's rehab has been more limited due to the intense pain he is experiencing in his left shoulder. Yesterday it was so bad when he was up in his manual chair, he couldn't help but cry. After 3 Advil and an ice pack, he was finally able to bear the pain. So the rehab is focusing more on his right and his standing. But it is still too limiting for what Matt needs
Monday Matt was able to go into the pool but wasn't able to stand up in it because there was a shortage of staff. Last night while I was taking to Matt on Skype, we found a bowling game we could do and it was great fun, except I stink! I only bowled 77 and Matt got 155.
Matt also has an0ther bladder infection but he doesn't have to take any meds unless it gets worse. It is the type that is usually self-limiting, but if it does get worse he will have to go on IV medication. So prayers that won't happen.
But especially pray for the pain in his left shoulder to subside and they are able to figure out something so he can continue with his rehab. Chronic pain can eat away at you. One drop of water on the top of your head doesn't feel like anything, but after the 1000 drop it can drive you crazy. Psalms 6:2 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. And verse 9 "The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer."

Quarantine Lifted

Matt was very happy to hear the quarantine was lifted Friday afternoon. One thing about dad not being there is Matt had to do some things for himself. He said that made him extremely grateful for dad and all the time he spends with Matt.
Wednesday Matt dressed himself, or should I say just his shirt. Unable to lift it over his head, because of all the rocks in it! In the head,,, not the shirt. Stood in the standing frame 3 times. Really working on Matt's upper body strength. They put the machine to about 80% of the way, and then Matt has to use his upper body to get himself into a full standing position. He says it is awful, so tired afterwards. Matt was also able to go outside on the lawn, but not in the parking lot. Was in his electric chair but was in his manual chair on Thursday. If he stays in his electric chair too long his legs become spastic. Was able to talk to dad from a distance but unable to make contact. Dad was busy making sure the van was in tiptop shape for the journey to Red Deer for the August long weekend. Cost $400 just to change all the fluids and replace some parts. Nothing is cheap these days.
On Friday when Matt was in his manual chair, tried wheeling himself around but by noon he was exhausted and had to ask for help to get him to and from his room. Tried also lifting his left leg with his right leg when they slipped off the wheelchair, the right being much stronger and said it was so difficult, like climbing a mountain without any training. Almost impossible. His mind is saying "yes I can do this" but his body is saying "Forget it Mister!" Has been eating all his meals by himself.
Friday was good news that he was able to visit with dad again. However still did rehab in his room because the quarantine was not lifted until later in the day. Played Wii with dad, baseball of course and also played some today when they were not watching the football game between Hamilton and Sask. Matt said it was such a close game with Sask winning 33-28 in the last 30 seconds of the game.
Tonight Matt and I were reminiscing about the "bad old days" when his injury first happened. I was talking about August long weekend last year and how when we almost lost Matt twice we got together and prayed for his healing and that he would continue to be with us. Thank God for answered prayers. Matt mentions it is so much a blur but still remembers when a fly would land on his nose and he couldn't brush it off. Again praise for Matt to be able to use his right hand to do so many things. 1 Chronicles 16:10-12 "Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced."

No Visitors For Awhile

Matthew phoned me last night upset about the no visitor rule for a few days due to a viral outbreak. So dad cannot go a visit and neither can anyone else. That is the first time since Matt was injured that someone hasn't been with him so prayers that the "quarantine" ends quickly and visitors are once again allowed. The worst part is no rehab in the therapy department because Matt cannot leave the floor he is on. So no trips outside and only therapy in his room.
Matt has been on the go since last Friday, when he travelled to Weekes for cousin Michelle's wedding. Loved sitting around the campfire and visiting with the family, stayed out until 1:30 am. For the wedding on Saturday they had a slow start and didn't even have Matt up when I phoned at 1pm. The wedding started at 2pm? in Weekes but I believe they made it on time.
Sunday visited again with family and didn't return to Saskatoon until 7 pm. Matt didn't get settled until 1230 am and was too worked up from all the happenings that he didn't feel tired and stayed up even later.
Monday Matt was once again in the pool. I think that is his favorite rehab. He was able to extend his legs in the pool like he was kicking to swim but needed weights to bring his legs back down. Also did a workout at the gym on the arm bike and pulleys.
Today Matt practiced dressing himself. He had gotten a new shirt which he really likes but is a bit smaller than what he is used to so was unalbe to get it over his head. Dad brought Matt some food, but wasn't able to see him. So a quiet day overall.

Watching Fastball

So much happened this week it is hard to know where to start!
On Sunday mom had phoned me quite worried about Matt. His temp was up, feeling unwell, no appetite. Having some difficulty breathing and worried it was his lungs. So on Monday she phoned back saying Matt had passed 2 large kidney stones. Now having had them myself, I was thinking a large grain of sand. Mom actually measured it and it was 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch. Hard as a rock. And he passed 2 of them! This is one time Matt I can tell you that you are lucky you cannot feel pain the same as the rest of us because I would have died! They showed the Dr. when they returned to Saskatoon and he just couldn't believe that Matt didn't feel much pain. You could definitely give birth Matt and laugh at the pain!
So needless to say Matt is feeling a whole lot better. Appetite has improved, feeling stronger and his temp is down. Tuesday they went to the P.P. sports day. Matt was disappointed there where so few slow pitch and fastball teams but enjoyed visiting with everyone. Then it was back to Saskatoon.
Wednesday Matt did some mat work to do muscle testing and evaluation. They feel his left has had a noticeable improvement, but his right side is about the same. Just taking a breather so the left can catch up. Practiced standing with the standing frame in his room. Jacki and the kids stopped in for a visit on their way to Michelle's wedding this weekend. They are staying at Auntie Karen's and Uncle Neil's because mom's car was broken into. I think she was more upset that they took a bag of chips. I told her to stop eating those things! Or at least finish them! So now she is having her windshield repaired because they threw a big rock to break the glass.
Today was a busy day. Dad was quite impressed at something Matt did. When Matt is in his manual chair, to lift his left hand from the wheel of his chair he needs to reach over and lift it with his right hand. However today he used his shoulder in a straight lift to get his left hand back on his lap. Took alot of work but he did it. Did some group therapy today and practiced hitting the balloon with the badminton racket. Then they made Matt put rings onto some poles, but they kept lifting the poles higher and higher, so Matt had to reach up. He could make it to about eye level but really had to work hard. Jacki was his coach and wouldn't let him quit.Probably nagged him into doing it! Stood for 7 mins in the Argyl, which is the standing frame he can walk in but not doing too much walking these days, just working on standing. Also did some mat work and they laid him on his belly. I am sure that felt weird, hasn't done that for ages. Felt good though. Wanted to check how his breathing was and did fine.
Right now Matt, Jacki, and dad are watching fastball at Gordie Howe Park. Grandma got stuck.. I mean.. has the privilege of babysitting. Canada just finished beating U.S. 4-2 and they are wathcing Japan play the U.S. When I asked when they were going back to Parkridge Matt said not until the 50/50 was drawn.
Thanks for all the friends who came to see Matt. So good to be part of life outside of the nursing home. I know that you are often overwhelmed by your situation Matt, but the Lord is always with you. Lamentations 3:32-33 "Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction of grief to the children of men."

One year Anniversary

Usually when you think of an anniversary it is in correlation with a happy event. Matt has enjoyed being home but difficult to think about all the things he was doing last year prior to his accident. But lets recap on what Matt was like right after his injury. He was on a ventilator, had surgery on his neck, was unable to drink water, eat or communicate verbally. The only way he could talk to us was by blinking his eyes using an alphabet board. The future was very bleak and the chances of Matt ever moving or breathing on his own were less than 1%. So Matt, let's celebrate your accomplishments since that day and only look forward and up. You have come such a long way and we love you for all you have done. Thanks for continue to persevere and retain hope for the future. We all know with the power of the Lord you can do anything Matt!

Home Tomorrow

Matt is going to Weekes tomorrow to attend the sports day. It is hard to believe it is almost the one year anniversary of the accident. Matt was a bit sad today thinking about what he was doing on this day last year and how quickly it all changed on June 30th.
Tuesday: Matt was able to try out the standing frame again. Always dizzy the first go but on the 2nd try was able to stand 8-10 mins. He doesn't wear the knee brace when he is in the frame because his knees are pushed right against the frame. Tried out the muscle stim on the left arm and also on the left calf muscle. The reason they are doing this is to try on get Matt's foot to lift up towards the ceiling. Still drags his toe. Found out something interesting. Matt is always saying is neck and left shoulder are sore. So did an x-ray and discovered he has a sublixation, or separation of the shoulder. His muscle is not strong enough to hold his bones so needs a rest. Mom has to go and buy a binder at some medical supply store to hold his shoulder from moving too much.
Wednesday: did something cool while he was laying in bed. Matt put his shirt on all by himself. It took him 25 minutes but he did it! We are so proud of you, Matty! God never said it would be easy, He just gives you the strength to persevere. Romans
5:3-5 "Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."
Today: Matt had a bath, and I can always tell because his hair looks so shiny! Did some more transferring, and mom said he looks stronger. Feeling tired but felt better in the afternoon. Still has antibiotics for one more day than is finished. Stood with the standing frame again. The first time up was dizzy but remained standing for 5 minutes, The second time stood for 6 minutes. Mom said they even forgot his abdomen binder and he still did well. Then Matt had to work but was rewarded with a pizza, which he almost ate by himself.
I can't say it enough, you always astound me with your patience and fortitude. When I grow up, I want to be just like you! (Of course, that will never happen...the growing up part I mean!)

Mom Is Back

So much to write about so here we go!
Friday was very unproductive. Matt hasn't been feeling like eating until supper time, and after he gets his supper meds he feels better. He didn't have any rehab because all his therapists were gone. It might have something to do with it being 26 degrees. So warm Matt had a little burn when he was outside.
Saturday Matt went with dad to watch 10 and 12 year olds play baseball. He said they are definitely in need of practice and coaching. However I told him what it was like watching him play hockey when he was young. We would cheer like crazy if he would touch the puck once the whole game. The rest of the time we would be yelling at him to stop looking in the windows at his reflection! Feeling better today. Took Gravol in the am so was able to eat lunch. (Just an update that Matt is off his sleeping pills since he was home for Grandma's funeral and is still suffering with a urinary tract infection and they have switched antibiotics). For exercise dad took the legs off is power chair and practiced straightening his legs.
Sunday watched some more ball. Said it was not much better. Good to get outside.
Monday Matt was in the pool again. First he starts out by sitting on the edge of the bed with help. Then he has to transfer on to a trolley like mechanism so they can wheel him down to the pool. The trolley hooks up to the pool lift. There is no ramp into the pool so can't use a wheelchair. Then they lower him into the pool and put noodles under his back and arms, another under his hips, so he is laying horizontal. Then to stand, they put weights on Matt's ankles.
Matt also did some mat exercises. First he transfers from his chair to the mat with the help of one staff member and dad pulls the chair back, which is an improvement. Matt said he surprised himself today by sitting over the edge of the bed for over 6 minutes. First the therapists get him into a sitting position, put his hands beside him and tell him to balance himself. He tried to lift his legs at the same time however he almost fell over.
Did some muscle stim on his left elbow to get it to bend. Practiced with the hand putty and there was a noticeable imprint in the putty so more strength in his left hand. Keep working hard, Matt. Don't give up faith. Remember the story of Peter on the boat. Jesus was walking towards the boat on the water and Peter started to walk towards Him. However when the wind started blowing and he focused on his physical environment, he became scared and started to sink. Jesus reached out his hand to Peter and saved him, saying "You of little faith, why did you doubt? (Matthew 14:27-31) Don't focus on earthly things to maintain your faith, just look up!

Summer Weather at Last

Not sure what the weather has been like in Sask, but here it has been very wet. Happy to have a day where it didn't rain.
Just to recap that Matt did not make it to ball on Sunday, but visited with Nolan and Lindsay before they returned to Calgary.
Monday Matt had upper extremity stretches in the am and then made chili with another resident. Said it was really good but wouldn't give me the recipe! Then he got to spend an hour in the pool. Was really excited about that. Was able to stand without feeling faint or dizzy. The water pressure on his legs keeps his blood pressure from dropping. Matt had weights on his legs to help prevent them from floating out of position, so Matt tried to lift his right leg with the weights on . Did it twice but got really tired. Because it was Father's Day on Sunday, they had a vintage car show at the nursing home. Matt said there was about 15 vehicles there. They even had a 1934 Chrysler with the original motor in it.
Tuesday tried out the electrical stimulation on his left arm. Asked him if he felt an improvement and agreed he feels like there is something there. Just has to remind himself to move it during the day. Tends to forget about it. Was happy when he discovered he could pu t the brakes on his wheelchair. He bends over and can also put the brake on the left side as well with his right hand. He also found out he can push himself backwards in the wheelchair by using his right foot. However because of the permanent foot pedals on the chair he can't go forward. Matt had forgotten to mention that he is being treated for a urinary tract infection since last Thursday. That could explain why he has been feeling so poorly, but states he also has a sore throat in the am's. So when Matt tried the sit stand frame felt really awful and didn't do too well.
Wednesday Matt worked out on the arm bike for 20 mins. Practiced transferring from the chair to the bed. Only needed 2 people to help transfer and said that at times only one person was needed. Great work Matt!
Today Matt tried doing activities of daily living. Could almost get his shirt on by himself but had trouble getting it over his left elbow and shoulders. Tried standing today but his blood pressure kept going wacko. Went from 90/60 to 75/50 and felt really dizzy. Played badminton in the gym but instead of a birdie he uses a balloon. Can hit it almost every timeas long as it is hit right to him.
Prayers for Matt's continued recovery. God has not forgotten about you Matt, and we thank Him everyday for small miracles.

Happy Father's Day

Finally got through to dad to wish him a great Father's Day. And where was he? By Matt's side as usual. Not many dad's would be as dedicated. I believe alot of Matt's positive attitude is having family by his side. Thanks Dad! Proverbs 23:24-25 "The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!"Friday Matt was feeling good again. In the am, 3 therapists bombarded Matt while he was in bed and brainstormed with him on what he could and couldn't do, and ways to help him accomplish the things he wanted to do. So one thing they tried was for Matt to move himself in the bed. Unless someone turns Matt, he lays on his back and can't reposition himself. So between them, they helped Matt wiggle from one side of the bed to the other. It took him an hour, fully exhausted but he did it! Dad said it was like watching snow melt. You know it is melting, but sometimes it is just a drip. One thing I have learned is never say never with Matt. In the afternoon, did some weights and pulley exercises. And I just found out Matt has a new job! Parkridge has a concession selling chips, pops, the regular stuff. It is owned by a fellow quad and he really wanted Matt to come and give it a try. So Friday evening from 5-9 pm Matt was put to work. Dad was trying to help but the owner told him to leave Matt, he would figure out some way to do it. And sure enough, after a few attempts, Matt was able to do it. The owner is so impressed by Matt's overall progress and truly believes Matt will get better one day.
Saturday Matt had the most company since coming to Parkridge. He was also to go watch some ball and Gordie Howe park, Chad Ekren was playing, but the weather wasn't cooperating. So dad said maybe today they would go if they ever get Matt to wake up. It is 1200 and Matt is still semiconscious. Dad even tried waving mom's hot wings under his nose to no avail. I suppose it is a day of rest!

Not a Great Week

I think being at home for a week took its toll on Matt. Rehab wasn't great this week because he just wasn't feeling well.
Tuesday felt just awful. Said he was so tired. They think it may be some kind of virus he picked up because some other people from the funeral felt the same way (me included!). They have changed the back of Matt's manual wheelchair to make it easier to do his exercises in, but states it feels so uncomfortable. The new back pushes him too far foreword. The manual chair is not made for him in the first place, just borrowed from another quad patient. Maybe have to look in to purchasing one for him (cost is around $8000). Matt still did some rehab in spite of feeling so yucky.
10:30 activities of daily living, such as trying to put his own shirt on, wash his face. Then off to the gym for some arm bike exercises.Did about 15 mins.
1400 tried to walk, just couldn't get those legs or feet to move, but did practice standing
1500 put him to bed because4 he was so tired, but he didn't sleep
1600 up in his power chair
1800 back to bed for the night
Wednesday Matt felt alot better.
100 20 mins arm bike
1100 occupational therapist put more traction on the left wheel
1300 used the sit/stand machine, works better than the previous one but he has to transfer into it, instead of going straight from his chair. So is more difficult and takes 2 people to do it. Has it in his room so can use it whenever he wants however difficult to find enough people to help.
1800 feed himself his supper, which was easy because it was KFC!
Thursday felt lousy again, dry heaving in the am, nauseated and faint. Didn't have any rehab because his therapist was out sick as well.By 6 pm Matt took some gravol and felt 100 times better. Nolan and Lindsay stopped on their way to Weekes and visited for awhile. Dad and Matt played Wii in the afternoon, bowling and baseball. Was up in the manual chair and tried to push himself. It works better with the new grip, but still is very weak and needs to continue to practice.

As the one year anniversary of Matt's accident approaches, he may feel that things are moving too slowly. Romans 8:25 "But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience". Easy for us to say, not having to live Matt's experience except through empathy. But we have all seen great things through Matt, and know that there a many more great things to come. Acts 3:16 "By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see." Now it isn't complete physical healing yet, but having movement in all limbs, breathing on his own, standing for short periods were all things unamaginable almost one year ago. So praise to God for all the blessings.

Back To Parkridge

Matt returned to Parkridge safely on Sunday evening. Not sure how he feels about that. On one hand, it is so nice to be home, and on the other hand it is great to be back for rehab.
Yesterday Matt didn't have his meds before rehab and he spasmed quite a bit which makes it difficult to move. But he still did alright considering that he hasn't had any therapy for over a week. The therapist was worried that Matt may have regressed so she did a functional test to see where he is at. Matt is still registering 0 on the left hand but she can feel it is trying to move. She has set some goals for Matt to attain this week. They are not easy goals so Matt will have to work very hard.
1) Eat one meal a day by himself (not including cutting the meat)
2) Walk 50 feet (Matt will walk three times this week)
3) When laying down on his right side, has to push himself up into a sitting position(this will be very difficult, lots of prayers for this one!!)
4) Roll when laying down to both sides (right now Matt does okay from right to left)
So Matt has his work cut out for him. When I asked how he was feeling, states his hands are numb, can hardly grasp anything. Hopefully it is just a transient thing and will be better today. Tried the muscle stimulator on his left arm. He was disappointed with the results, hoping to have more movement, but the movement he had before is still there.
Mom and Matt and quite a laugh over trying to do rehab in the evening in his bed. Mom had tied one of those therabands (the stretchy exercises bands) to the foot of his bed and wanted him to pull with his right hand. Mom should have been in the girl scouts for knot tying lessons because Matt pulled so hard, that the band let go from the foot of the bed and smacked him right in the face!! I sure wish I could have seen that! Purely to be sympathetic, right Matt? Never to laugh! (Giggle, giggle).
Thanks again to all of you who came to visit Matt while he was home, who took the time to chat, or just say hello. So good to see Matt in more of a normal environment for a 21 year old.
1 Peter 5:10 "And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."

Still In Weekes

Just wanted to give a quick update. the girls and I just returned to Red Deer and are glad to be home. It is quite a drive but the DVD player makes the trip shorter (for the girls!).
Matt has decided to stay in Weekes until Sunday. He has been off his sleeping pill since returning home and is sleeping well. It took him a couple of days but has adapted to being without a "bedtime" helper to sleep.
Tuesday was a sad day with Grandma's funeral but was nice to see so many of the family. Loved to reminisce about all the times spent together and how much Grandma meant to all of us, young and more mature (I didn't want to say older because I would be getting some phone calls!). Matt didn't have a great day physically. His neck was bothering him alot and his limbs felt like they were in glue. He could hardly move at all. Usually he says they feel like they are in jello, so was more unusual. We put him down for a nap in the afternoon and woke up feeling somewhat better.
Wednesday Matt was feeling much better and said he had such a good sleep. Dad and I took him uptown for coffee and he played 6 games of crib with the guys. Then Nolan, Lindsay, and I took Matt to Weekes Hotel for wings. As anyone from Weekes knows, that is the only place to go for some food so off we went. Matt sure enjoyed the food and was able to visit with some of his friends that came to visit. I chaperoned to make sure he didn't bug the waitresses too much. I also helped him out with certain aspects of care that needed attention. So all in all was a good night.
Thanks for everyone who gave food, cards, gifts, their time and prayers for Grandma's funeral. It will always be remembered.

In Weekes

Matt and Dad travelled to Weekes on Saturday to be with the family. Jacki, Gary and kids are there and we will be travelling tomorrow, as will Nolan and Lindsay. Thanks to much for everyone's kind words on the blog. Even through our sorrow, meeting with the family to talk to each other and lean on their shoulders always helps the grieving process. Lamentations 3 "Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love."
The move to ward C4 is complete with Matt saying everything went smoothly. There are no younger people on this floor so that may be a challenge. However all of the patients are just respite for either a fractured hip, recovering from a stroke, and most will be going home after their stay. I couldn't even tell Matt had moved because the background on skype looked the same.
Matt did some therapy at Parkridge on Thursday. Did some mat exercises. He was surprised that he can get his knee to his face if the therapist helps him start the bend in his knee. Of course with those long legs he could touch the ceiling! Matt also noted his back is getting stronger. He was very encouraged when they sat him up on the mat, if they situated his hands beside him just right, he could sit up by himself for quite awhile. They even tried to overbalance him a little, and he could straighten himself out. But Matt finds his lower back is stiff and numb, a very strange feeling he couldn't quite explain. Matt was also able to do the arm bike for 10 mins.
Not sure when I will be able to do the blog again. Mom and dad don't have a computer. But will try to find the way to keep everyone updated.

Sad Passing

Just wanted to write of the passing away of Matt's grandma today. It was inevitable but it doesn't diminish the pain. The funeral will be sometime next week and Matt and dad will travel home. Mom will be organizing the funeral preparations so will be kept busy. Most of the brothers and sisters were home prior to grandma's passing.
Please add an extra prayer for the family and their grieving.
Job 19:25-27 "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. I myself will see him with my own eyes-I , and not another. How my heart yearns within me!"

Another Move

It has been a roller coaster week. In Weekes mom has been busy at the hospital with Grandma, who isn't doing very well and all the kids are home. In Saskatoon, Matt will be moved to a new floor at the nursing home. Currently Matt is on C2, which is the long term ward. Now he will be moved to C4, which is the short term stay ward. Because of the transient nature of the floor, the staff may be quite different and unsure whether that may cause some difficulties. However I am sure with Matt's positive disposition and attitude he will do just fine. Also Matt will no longer be going to City rehab and will have rehab exclusively at Parkridge. When I talked to Matt last night he sounded okay about the whole thing and said that the rehab staff are going to focus on building up what movement he has. They will guarantee one day a week of standing, but their main focus will be on strengthening. So prayers that the move will be as good as all the others. I think Matt likes the thought of "short stay" and that he will be coming home. The short stay is for 90 days which will take us into August.
Monday Matt got a new cushion for his chair. It is called a ride cushion and is much harder then his previous one to prevent pressure sores and to ease his movement while in the chair, such as moving his butt and repositioning himself. He doesn't like it because his butt doesn't have much padding. But time will tell. Maybe it will be uncomfortable enough to make him change positions on his own! I was quite impressed when talking to Matt on Skype that he could lift a 710 ml plastic bottle full of pop quite easily. He can't lift a coffee mug, as his fingers don't have enough strength to hold the handle. But finds he can grip the plastic bottles quite nicely. Worked out in the gym on the upper tone machine and practiced on the mat. Did really well with his bridge, can hold himself quite awhile. While he was here, he did the bridges while in bed but was harder on a soft surface. He also practiced moving his legs from side to side by having his knees bent. He could do about 70% of the movement without help.
Tuesday Matt really concentrated on moving his left hand. He feels there is improvement but it is slow. Worked with the dumbbells and practiced in his manual wheelchair. He said the new grip system works great but felt really tired all day. He didn't get up until 1030 and went back to bed at 2 pm, then slept until 5 pm.
Wednesday Matt went to City to practice standing and walking. He was able to go about 25 feet. When he walks, he still cannot lift his foot off the ground so it is more of shuffling gait. This time he was able to actually lift his right foot off the ground 2-3 times. Matt continues to wear the brace on his left leg and the curling slider on both feet to aid in movement.
Prayers for strength at home and strength in Saskatoon. Isaiah 40:29-31 "He gives strength to the weary, and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Lots to catch up on. We were away for the weekend and I wasn't able to do the blog so I hope everyone enjoys the new pictures.
Thursday Matt wasn't feeling very well, felt like he couldn't eat anything. He went to bed at 6:30 pm, woke up at 8:30, then went back to bed at midnight and slept until 1030 in the morning. All that travelling and visiting. Matt sill managed to do some arm bike therapy and push his wheelchair a bit, but wasn't feeling strong and didn't do well. Mom returned back to work.
On Friday Matt went to City for standing exercises. They tried it without the brace on his left leg, like we did in Red Deer. But he can't walk without the brace yet. IN order to stand without the brace, the therapists put bands around his feet and lower legs to stop him from spasming. While in Red Deer, we had 4 people to hold him up and hold his lower legs, but at City they only have 2 people so it is much harder. Went outside for awhile. Temperature was above 20 degrees but windy.
They brought over a new standing machine to Parkridge just for Matt. They were very excited until they realized it was too short. It is built for a 6 foot 5 inch person and Matt is 6 foot 7. The band that is supposed to fit across his chest fits exactly at his diaphragm, so he can't breathe. Too bad. It would have been great.
This weekend was pretty boring. Dad was doing modification s on his manual wheelchair to make it easier for his hands to grip the wheel. So they are hoping to have it ready tomorrow.
Matt has shown such patience in his new normal. James 5:11 "As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy."

Back To Parkridge

Well, the house is all quiet. Matt, mom and dad went back to Saskatoon yesterday. It was such a flurry of activity that no one had time to be sad. It was raining heavily so Matt had to wait until the rain subsided until they loaded him up. The trip was long and Matt's neck was very sore. He told me if anyone has a neck they could loan him, to let us know!!
We didn't get to do many of the things we had planned. The weather did not cooperate Tuesday and we missed the ball game. But overall I think Matt enjoyed it. We did things a little unorthodox but he found out that he wasn't as fragile as he thought. We were very impressed with him on Monday night when we told him to push himself in his chair. He didn't think he could do it but with his gloves on for grip, he wheeled himself around my kitchen, and we only had to put his left hand back on the wheel when it came off a few times. Also he could use just his left arm/hand to turn the chair by pushing on the wheel. Very proud of you Matt. Just last week he couldn't do it that well and now I even video taped his accomplishment. Not sure how to get it on the blog though, have to wait until John has a free moment.
Thanks for all the continued prayers and good thoughts. Hope everyone has a great long weekend.

Enjoying the Stay

I think Matt has enjoyed the stay so much he wants to stay an extra day. Tonight if the weather stays decent we will go a watch a ball game in town.
Sunday we stayed around the house. It was more of a relaxing day except in the kitchen, which is constanly on the go. Airene and her friend came and did more physio with Matt. He asked how come it lasts 2 1/2 hours and we told him that it was good for him. I think he disagreed. He was feeling pretty stiff afterwards. Matt stayed up in his manual chair all day. Played some more Wii in the evening. Matt beat Gary and someone was sulking! Matt was pretty tired but still didn't go to bed until midnight. Slept well.
Monday Jacki, Gary and the kids left and so did Nolan and Lindsay. We didn't have much time to recover and we had more company from Edmonton. Auntie Ardis, Uncle Ken, Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Hughie came down to visit. Thank goodness because Uncle Ken helped me plant the garden. Matt again stayed up in his manual chair. No standing exercises today but we did practice using a board to transfer Matt from the chair to the bed. He does help out enought to get him transferred nicely, but the rest of the supportive crew spend too much time giggling they are useless!! We had a game of dice and crib, then had to stop for a hot wing break.
Thanks for everyone who reads the blog and keeps up on all Matt's happenings. We will write more tonight.

Busy Day

We had a late night last night and I don't think tonight will be any different. Right now we are having a fishing tournament and let me tell you, it is not easy (coming from someone who cannot do computer simulated fishing!).
Matt woke up late this morning so the day didn't really start for him until 1130 but it was full bore the rest of the time. Our nanny Airene and her friend came to give Matt a workout (they are both physiotherapists). They worked on him for 2 1/2 hours and Matt was exhausted. First with four people we were able to get Matt to stand. It is like holding a tree in the wind and trying to prevent it from blowing down. After the workout Matt had to take a nap because the heat of the day (30 degrees) and the excitement, he was exhausted.
After he woke up we spent the remainder of the day outside. Every time someone would go past Matt, they would make him do something, such as throw a Frisbee, toss a ball, kick his legs, etc. Even tonight he is really tired but we are still bugging him. I think he is ready to go back to Parkridge! But he enjoyed the homemade hamburgers, sausage, baked potatoes, and corn.
We are sure enjoying having Matt here. Jacki and Gary came with the kids, Nolan and Lindsay are here as well. Grandma and Grandpa are enjoying the grand kids (and Jacki and I are enjoying that!).
Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts. More good things to come I am sure. It is a far cry from Christmas. So much to be thankful for. 1 Cor 15:57 "But thanks be to God, He gives us the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ".

THEY MADE IT!

Just wanted to write a quick note to let everyone know that Mom, Dad and Matt made it safe and sound. They arrived at 9 pm and everything worked out great. The first part of the trip Matt was overheating until they realized that the heater was on! The wind really put a dent in their fuel consumption but other then that it was alright.
Nolan and Lindsay came down to help get everything unloaded and help get Matt settled. The ramp is a little short so it takes four people to make sure he doesn't tip backwards, the incline is so steep. I was able to get a lift, bed, mattress, special duvet mattress, and a Sara lift (sit/stand machine) for free through a great organization called Lending Cupboard. They receive donations from people, service the machines and make sure everything is in working order and then supply it free of charge. So all there is is the cost for transporting it to and from the organization outlet.
Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful support group out there. So if anyone is in Red Deer this weekend, swing by. We have enough food to feed a small country!

The Trip Is On!!

I have been waiting on pins and needles to see if they were going to make it to Red Deer. Mom just phoned and said they are on their way! A few tense moments waiting to see if the van would be done in time. They were supposed to be here yesterday but the van wasn't ready. So today Matt was able to get a bath before leaving which is great so no stinky boys (except John, Gary and Nolan).
So now I can do an update on the weeks events.
Wednesday was another good day. Matt was able to walk 50 feet with of course lots of help. The right leg again goes pretty good on its own with plenty of encouragement and a few shoves and pulls. The left was able to go about 3 steps and then wants to quit. But all in all great progress. I asked Matt how he is doing when he tries to stand up and he estimates he does about 20% of the work. The legs don't help too much, those quads are just too weak. But he tries to pull himself up using his right hand on the bar. And that arm is coming along nicely. When Matt tried the upper tone machine he could pull 20 lbs 3 times, then he went down to 10 lbs. And the left is improving. It can actually pull 2.2 lbs. Now to explain the upper tone machine, it has 3 levels of weight training, full, medium, and close. Think of it as a stick with weights on it. If the 2 lb weight is at the end of the stick, it is harder to lift. If you bring the weight more to the middle of the stick it is a little easier and if you bring it closer to your hand, the stick with the same weight is easiest to lift. So Matt's left hand was able to lift that 2.2lbs in the middle, and with the right he is at the end of the stick. At occupational therapy they are really focusing on Matt moving himself in the chair to reposition himself. Takes quite a bit of strength and so will practice when he gets here. We have all kinds of things planned for him. Matt may be wishing he had stayed at Saskatoon!!
Thursday Matt had missed his morning rehab because he was too tired, so mom made him do his "homework" all day! Next time you'll get up, right Matt? In the afternoon, Matt had a pizza and Wii party at City, courtesy of Paul Gustafson and the rehab staff. Rocky, Barett, and Matt played games and Matt "caught' a 12 lb fish. I think it was the only fish he has ever caught. No wait, that was Nolan! When Matt and Nolan went fishing with dad when they were young, Matt kept catching fish and Nolan caught nothing. So Nolan made Matt change rods with him, and Matt then caught a whopper on Nolan's rod and Nolan caught seaweed!
Prayers for the long trip here and for a safe journey. I will use my favorite verse proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding; in all ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

New Machine

They are always trying new things with Matt to try and improve his current abilities. And you can really tell. When I watch him on the webcam, I ask him to move his right arm and he does it so much easier and with greater range of motion. The physio is really focusing on his mobility and taking his movements to the max and spends less time on weight training. So he may not be able to lift as much, but he can move so much better.
Monday Matt spent the day in his electric wheelchair. As much as Matt wants to be in his manual, he is unable to do his exercises in it. The back is high and wraps around him like a seat of a sports car, so he can't pull his arm back when he does the arm bike. Matt went outside for quite a bit and was proud to show me the beginnings of a tan. He has been eating spitz like crazy which makes him stay outside longer. He can grab the spitz out of the bag himself, however his hands are too big to get them out of the bag. So dad pours the spitz into a cup which Matt grabs and he can pour the quantity he wants into his mouth(which is usually alot!). Spent 1 1/2 hours in therapy doing the arm bike and pulleys.
Today was another beautiful day, maybe not with sunshine but was still warm. They made the trip to City for rehab and they tried Matt in a machine that he stands in, but doesn't do any walking. It is on a stand with wheels, and they strap Matt's upper body in and his legs rest against a cushioned area in the front. It can be moved around the room, so Matt can remain standing and go other places. It would be a great machine to have at home to gain muscle in his legs when he visits. He didn't stand long today, just getting used to the new machine. Felt like he was tipping to the right all the time. Also worked out in the gym on the stepper, however wasn't very successful because he had tired himself out on the stand machine. Matt is finding his left arm is getting stronger, the dexterity is slow but the pushing/ pulling movement is coming. Neck is feeling better because he just got a massage.
Lots of prayers for the van to be road worthy for the long trip. Dad is quite concerned but Matt really wants to come and just visit with family and have a different change of pace. Nothing is too great for God when you put your trust in Him. Psalms 56:4 "In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid."

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Hope everyone remembered their Mothers on their special day. Matt was quite funny actually. I was at Jacki's this weekend celebrating Bobby's 3rd birthday and Matt wanted to know if we had got mom anything. We had all said what we had gotten her and Matt was just chomping at the bit wanting to say what he had gotten her. He had phoned the florist in Porcupine for flowers and had arranged for Auntie Karen to pick them up for mom. But the best part is they were 21 different color roses, one for every year since he was born. It made me tear up a little. Much better then my gift!
I must back track quite a bit, time just seems to fly and I can't seem to find a few quiet moments to do the blog. Thursday Matt didn't have therapy until 4 pm and really focused on the bike machine. He had slept in until 11am, but said he had slept well all night as well so his body obviously needed a rest.
Friday Matt again did the arm bike for 20 min and was up in his manual chair all day. His neck gets really sore but he is determined to do it. When he tries to propel his wheelchair, the biggest obstacle is his left arm. If dad puts Matt's arm and hand in the proper position on the wheel, Matt can move forward. however he can't lift up his left arm back on the wheel. Also when he pushes with his arms, his muscles in his neck stretch a bit and he begins to spasm. So slow progress but with alot of practice, I am sure it will come.
Saturday Matt was again in his manual chair and went outside for the beautiful weather. Dad and him went to the local Co-op store and treated himself to the summer goodies of beef jerky and sunflower seeds. As soon as it is warm enough to go outside with a light jacket there is always an urgent need for spits!
Proverbs 23:25-26 "May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice! My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways."

Still Hoping

Still praying that Matt will make it to Alberta next weekend. The van is unavailable for comment on its condition so we will wait and see.
Monday Matt does rehab just in Parkridge. Dad wanted to see how Matt would do in the manual wheelchair. As nice as the electric chair is, it really doesn't help Matt with improving his strength and dexterity. So they put Matt in the manual and dad asked Matt if he could move it. Couldn't lift his left hand so dad put the left hand on the wheel and again asked him to move it. Wouldn't you know that he moved the chair a little bit. The biggest problem was lack of grip strength so dad will take it tomorrow and see what the physio? department can rig up to make it easier. Matt did stay in that chair all day, however dad had to push him around so Matt loses a bit of independence. At least dad can keep up with him! Able to do the arm bike for 25 mins with slight tension. They are hoping to have it so if someone is with him and the machine is free, he could exercise whenever he wants.
Tuesday was rehab at City. The stepper didn't work out so well but Matt did great with the upper body tone machine. They also tried him with the Saskpole again, but they had made an error on meds and he was really dopey, felt his head was too fuzzy. So try again next week.
Today dad didn't go with to City for rehab, he sent a stand in. Krista, the RN from RUH went with and said Matt had a great day. They did his standing and walking exercises. Matt walked (not on his own) 25 feet. When I talked to him tonight he told me that his right leg did it on its own without any help but his left could do about 2-3 steps and needed constant persuasion. The left foot has a curling slider on it so he doesn't have to lift it, and his toes want to curl down all the time so they rigged up a rubber band (like those exercise bands) to hold his foot up(a physio therapist has to hold it the whole time). Matt feels soon he may be able to go without the brace, feels stronger in his left he may be able to hold his own weight. But we will wait and see.
Leaps and bounds, Matt. Leaps and bounds!! I get so excited to think of all the progress you have made since Christmas. God has truly been listening to pour prayers and knows what is best for you. When you lay all your burdens at His feet, He loves you even more for putting your complete trust in Him.

OOPS!!

Just wanted to clarify that mom, dad, and Matt will make the trip to Red Deer May
15th, not the Mother's Day weekend! So if you are in Saskatoon for May 10th and 11th and are not visiting your mother, stop in for a visit at Parkridge!

Warmer Weather

Finally able to enjoy some time outside. Matt said there is a nice path around Parkridge so dad and him can enjoy the "fresh air".
Friday Matt had therapy at 1 pm in Parkridge. Did some weights. The physio focuses more on Matt's range of motion and technique then on the amount of weights he lifts. For example when he does the rowing she makes sure he reaches back as far as it can go, hold it for 1-2 secs and then go forward again. Threw the ball around for a bit. They were using the velcro ball and the plastic catcher with velcro on it. After a few times Matt said he didn't need it and started to throw and catch without it.
Saturday and today Matt doesn't have rehab so tries to do some exercises on his own, but is very difficult. One thing he finds is he can't stay in bed for as long as he did before otherwise he gets very stiff and numb. So likes to be up before 10 am. Matt had no company until today which makes for a long weekend, but sure enjoys it when someone comes.
Today was bath day. I noticed something was different, his hair was all shiny and he told me his feet don't stink anymore! I told him that is why he probably didn't have any company!
Prayers for continued healing and that the van will be in good working condition for next weekend, when Matt comes to visit in Red Deer. 1 Samuel 22:33-34 "It is God who arme me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights."

Slower Pace

Yesterday Matt was feeling a bit more sluggish. Felt dizzy in the am which affected his exercises. He did the 20 mins on the arm bike and then went to City to do some standing exercises. Matt had to sit down on the first attempt at standing because he felt dizzy but managed to stand again. He did really well when he practiced taking small baby steps. The right foot is much stronger but they were surprised at the left, which he also took 2 good steps with. Now it is not the same steps you or I would take. Matt's brain and body have forgotten how to walk so they continually encourage him and tell him what he should be doing next: lift your foot, bend the knee, twist at the hip to swing your foot forward. If Matt's feet are a big sluggish they sometimes prod it forward with their own feet. So it is really a process but Matt never gives up!!
I actually had a laugh at one of the exercises they want Matt to practice to strengthen him to use the Sask Pole (remember, the pole that goes from ceiling to floor and is beside his bed to aide in transferring). They want him to practice a movement similar to starting a push mower and all I could picture is Uncle Neil at every dance I have ever seen him at doing the lawnmower dance, especially to "Old Time Rock and Roll"! So Matt, get Uncle Neil to come show you how it is done!
Matt also tried the stepper again but wasn't very successful. He had such a good day on Tuesday that it was hard to beat. I had forgot to mention on Tuesday Matt was able to transfer from the chair to the mat using the transfer board and only 2 people helping him, which was really great. It was also good when he got back to Parkridge he got a massage.
Today was sad because mom had to go back to work. But dad always steps up to the plate and pinch hits. She left at 1100 to get to work by 2:45, talk about cutting it close. I guess travelling that same route so many times over the last year gives her a good estimation about arrival time. Matt had therapy on his arms at 3:30. Went outside but still really windy. When I asked him if he was doing any exercises in bed he told me at every commercial, he opens his left hand. He tries not to close it because the muscle tone is so bad, if he closes it he can't get them open again. Works on wiggling his toes too. Keep at it Matt, the journey continues and we are all with you, if not in body , then in Spirit. Please put a memory verse in the blog comments for tonight. I'll get back on track for the next blog!

Heavy Workout

Monday Matt had some meetings to figure out the best rehab for him. They discussed what he could do and how they could build on his strengths. A person from City came over to discuss what they would be doing for Matt over there.
So today they put Matt through his paces. First he did the arm bicycle for 20 mins. A trip to City rehab had more work for him. They worked Matt on the mat for 1 hour, rolling, sitting up. He discovered he could balance himself fairly well while sitting, so they have decided to do one day a week on the mat and one day a week standing/walking. You have to crawl before you can walk. It will be great to work out the core muscles such as his abs and back so they are stronger when he eventually walks by himself. So after being on the mat his neck was sore but they were not through with him yet. Matt went to the gym for 1/2 hour and did the stepper for one full minute by himself. He was very proud of himself and so are we!!
They also tried the rowing machine or upper body tone machine. He did way better then he had previously in his right hand but they were very suprised at his left hand. The way it works is they start with nothing, then some tension, then some weights at the beginning. So the left could hardly do anything when he was at City when there was nothing on the machine. However now he now can move the machine with a little tension on it.
Matt got to try a new machine they have which they didn't think would work for Matt. It makes his arms move like he was cross country skiing. The increments are from 1-7 and Matt could do increment 2. Matt, you not only amaze the staff but you also amaze all your die hard fans!!
Tommorrow he again goes to City . But first they will teach Matt to do self cathaterizations. It will increase his independence and help increase dexterity.
Will write more tomorrow. Keep praying and praising!!

Lots of Company

Was finally able to speak with mom and Matt. We were in Calgary for Jacki's birthday and just got back tonight. Matt looks so good because he got rid of his facial hair. He says he looks 15 but I think he looks great!
Matt is still not feeling great in the am and early pm, but by 4 pm he feels like his normal self. Mom was really pushing Matt Saturday to do his exercises. However she did it after he had his sleeping pills, so not good planning. But Matt always puts on his best performance and was able to hold the "bridge" position for 25 seconds. Matt is laying in bed and mom helps to bend his knees and hold them. Then he lifts his butt off the bed and has to hold that position. He was teasing mom that she couldn't hold that postion for 25 seconds! Go team Matt!! She also makes him move his left hand all the time and even though it makes him spasm it is improving, even if it is slow.
The weather hasn't been cooperating in Sask so not too much touring outside. But thank goodness for lots of company, it always makes the time go faster.
Played Wii against mom. They decided on golf. Matt beat mom. She didn't do too bad but her putting needs some work. So with two good arms mom couldn't beat Matt. Wait until the left really starts pulling ahead, then you could even beat me!!
Tonight Matt and I were asking trivia questions related to the bible. Matt had a few that were so difficult for me so I better start reading some more!
Psalms 147:10-11 "His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love."

Work, work, work

Mom got back on Wednesday and she hasn't given Matt a moment of peace. She used to say the same thing to Jacki and I when we would get home from school. "Oh good, you're home, now you can work, work, work"! The rehab has also been breathing down Matt's neck to do his "homework". Every day Matt has certain things he must accomplish, march in bed (if he can) leg curls, move both his arms every 20 mins, stuff like that.
Rehab on Wednesday was the arm bike. It is a little older, but they have rigged it up so it is higher and Matt has to use his shoulders more. Finds it easier to move and did it for 15 mins straight. Pretty stiff the rest of the day. I can tell by watching him in the video that he is moveing a little easier. Unfortunately Matt wasn't feeling so good and the soon found out why. He had another bladder infection. But by Thursday he had drank 3 1/2 litres of water to flush the nasties out of his system and is feeling much better.
Thursday Matt had another session with his arms on the pulley. They don't have anything to work his legs so has to wait until he goes to City rehab, hopefully next week. Matt was also able to enjoy some more company.
Matt met another quad in Parkridge who has been ther for 11 years. He severed his spinal cord C3 C4 I think while playing hockey when he was 22 years old. So he has no movement. Matt went to see his room and was quite impressed how it was set up. There is a huge 50 inch plasma screen TV, and everything is run by his wheelchair. The controls are on the head portion of the chair and if he turns his head a certain way, the chair moves. If he turns it another way, the TV comes on. Quite amazing.
I haven't been able to speak to mom or Matt today, so not much to say about Friday. Just want to take the time to thank the Lord for all the blessings we have received. Matt's continued progress, a great support system, caring staff, warm and comfortable bed, a great mom and dad, the list goes on and on. Psalms 84;12 "O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you"

No rehab yet

Things are of to a slow start regarding rehab. But Matt is very optimistic and in good spirits. Monday his neck was really hurting so the physio came and did some stretches. She said his left shoulder is hanging lower than the right which is causing him alot of the discomfort. The stretches really helped and last evening his neck wasn't hurting quite so bad. Matt talked to Nolan on the phone, watched hockey (yes he did see Montreal beat Boston!) and decided to stay in from the cold. For breakfast Matt had pancakes and pork sausage. He hadn't had pancakes for years and found he really liked them, especially when you eat them with sausage! For supper they served him chicken stew. Matt was tentative but once he started he really loved it.
Tonight he didn't have much time to talk. He was able to play a bit of Wii for rehab and had company. Said he didn't do too much seeing the weather still wasn't cooperating. Glad that he is having some company and will talk to him again tomorrow night. God's blessing on all!

1st bath in 6 months

Matt seems to really be settlng in to his new environment. God never asks if the burden is too much, He just gives the strength to persevere. And our expectations of a certain situation are never as clear as when the Lord is in control.
On Saturday Matt was able to meet some of the long term residents. But they are not exactly what would be expected. One is a llama, there is a minature horse, tarantula, and a snake which Matt had the immense pleasure of wrapping around his neck! Not for me thank you, but Matt said it was actually not that bad. I will take his word for it and leave it to my imagination! It even went on Matt's hand and tasted him with its forked tongue! Yuck!
Had a visitor form City, one of the occupational therapists. For supper, Matt had chicken breast, ginger beef, and some other tasty things. He was pretty impressed.
Today he had a bath. While at City, he had showers instead so this was the first bath he has had since RUH. What a feeling that must have been. Had more company. Barrett for rehab came. He had been a patient at Parkridge as well as rehab. Krista the RN came again so he wasn't lonely. The weather wasn't cooperating so he didn't venture outside. For supper Matt had 2 hamburgers, some real roast beef, with great gravy and some oven roast potatoes. Thank goodness they took the feeding tube out! He will gain so many pounds that they will have to order a new chair! A far cry from when he weighed a meager 165 lbs and was struggling with everything. God is truly watching over you and giving you the good things in life now. Only those who have been without can really appreciate when it comes back to them.
Met a family who recognized Matt from rehab. Their mother had been a patient and had often seen Matt with dad, so they were able to start up a conversation.
To anyone that wants to visit,Matt is on the 2nd floor, Northridge II, room 214. Each pod is called a neighborhood, and in each neighborhood are 45 patients. What he was impressed with is that each one has a big screen TV to watch. Of course! That way he can watch the hockey games on a big plasma screen!
Matt was also able to keep the same bed he had in rehab so that is one thing familiar. So many things to be thankful for. Give time tonight to be thankful for everything in your life. God loves to hear songs of praise.

Brighter Day

Got to talk to dad today. He felt the move went really well, however Matt not having a TV with a remote was a downer. That would have put a frown on Matt the TV addicts face! So Krista, a RN from city came down to check things out to see if everything was going okay. When she found out Matt didnt have a TV she went home and brought back a 20 inch TV with a remote, some weights, and anything else she thought Matt needed. I had forgot to mention when Matt went to Subway for supper, he was unable to get in because someone was parked in front of the ramp. So Matt had to wait outside while dad went and got him what he wanted. Well Krista heard that and happened to know the manager of the Subway, so I don't think Matt will have a problem next time! There was also some confusion regarding Matt's catheter supplies, bowel care products etc. Again Krista staightened everything out which Matt and dad were grateful.
Dad is really optimistic about the whole thing. The scenery is much better than originally thought and there is more places to go. The dining room is huge with a big common room, big screen TV, etc. The meals are really good. They have it buffet style and yesterday they were serving beef strogonaff, potatoes, gravy, the works. Of course it had to pass the sniff test, because with Matt he doesn't like new things and only likes mom's cooking, so was tentative. However once he started eating, he wolfed down the whole thing! No offence but I am sure it beats hospital food.
It turns out Parkridge has some staff working there that have ties to Porcupine and Weekes. The director? of nursing looked familiar to dad, and she asked if they were from Weekes. It turns out she had an uncle Andy Macdonald from Weekes, so dad and her chatted a bit. Then the doctor of Parkridge came to see Matt. His last name is Yelland and grew up in Porcupine!! While dad and Matt were outside, they heard a horn honking and it was one of the staff form ICU. She stopped to tell them she lives right dowwn the block and they should come sometime for a visit.
Matt even got to keep the same bed he had in City. So things are really looking alright. God knows what we need before we do, and if we trust in Him, he will provide our needs. Thanks agian to all who continue to keep reading the blog. Thanks also to Pat Gustafson who wrote about her son Andy. Not sure where you are from but have a visit with Matt if you are in the city. It is always great to have company. It sounds like rehab will start next week, so hopefully it wil go as well as when he was at the hospital.
Will speak with Matt tonight. He was so tired last night he went to bed at 9pm.

Move To Parkridge

This will be a short blog tonight. Just wanted to say the move was a success. Matt went to Parkridge just after 9 am this am. He was down hearted tonight, new place with new staff, new environment, new things to get used to all over again. There may be some problems when Matt needs to be cathaterized. The staff ratio is 6 nurses to 42 patients so when he rings the call bell, it will take some time before a staff will get there. I could see in his face he was trying to be positive but feeling overwhelmed and out of place.
Was able to go down to Subway for supper. The surroundings are quite a change as well, Parkridge is located on 22nd ave and not the most scenic. However each move that Matt has made he has done well after a few days, and each move was traumatic. But in time they will come to know him and love him. So prayers for some sleep tonight and that the transition stage will be over soon and the settling-in stage will start. No matter where you go Matt, God will follow you and carry you through it. Love you lots!

Can't Keep A Good Man Down

That Matt never ceases to amaze me with his resilience. He bounces back so well. The biggest hurdle about getting down is climbing back up and Matt always does just that. Yesterday he was in much better spirits. A resident who was doing a special exam on Matt had all the young medical students with him, so Matt had alot of attention. They tested his peripheral nerves or the ones that extend from his spinal cord to his body and extremeties. Matt can feel everything normally at about the C6 level, and then the feelings are less distinct. The resident tests Matt with dull and sharp to see if Matt can distinguish between the two. After the nipple area and down to his toes, Matt states it always feels dull, even when they are poking him with something sharp.
During OT, Matt played crib. He can now pick up al six cards at once but he can't open them up to see what they are. So he looks at them one at a time, memorizes what and where they are face down on the table, discards the two he doens't want and plays that way. He doesn't use the card holder any more which is a step up. Was able to take a trip outside and was less anxious. Still had a few "breathless" periods, but the resp therapist checked him over and stated it wasn't his lungs. However she did give him a royal tongue lashing about Matt not doing his breathing exercises, which are so important.
A social worker from Parkridge came over to talk with Matt about the move. Incidently, the social worker is related to Uncle Bob Thompson, small world!! She explained how everything workes. Matt will get 3 days a week rehab at Parkridge, then come to City 2 days a week as an outpatient. Matt was feeling pretty comfortable about the whole thing by the end of the talk.
Today was another good day. Matt again did his standing exercise, and was quite excited that he was able to take a small step with his right foot without any assistance. Overall he took 20 steps, with lots of help. Fantastic Matt!! Ask and you shall receive!
Went down to ICU and said his goodbyes. There were definetely a few tears shed in that room. Matt leaves for Parkridge at 10am tomorrow. Paul Gustafson came over to give his positive feelings about the move and Matt is really looking forward to it. We don't have much to worry about because Matt always has his cheerleaders beside him, making sure everyone tows the line. Paul also is encouraging Matt to practice self-catheterization, so he can do it himself instead of relying on someone else. Matt can void 200 mls into a urinary bottle, howwever his bladder holds 500 mls, so after an hour he still feels like he has to go. So still needs to use the catheter. But everything is getting better, however slow it may be. I was reminded of Fanny Crosby's old hymn "Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice. O come, to the Father throught Jesus the Son, and give him the glory great things he hath done!" Prayers always need to followed with praise.

Two Tough Days

Sunday was a difficult day mentally for Matt. He had went outside with dad and the weather was quite beautiful. However with warmer weather brings people riding bikes, playing ball, tossing a frisbee. Matt was finding it really hard to see everyone having fun and he couldn't do the same things. Depression had set in and would not give up its hold. Monday was another mentally exhausting day. He tried to do his exercises but felt he couldn't breathe. Anxiety hit him like a ton of bricks. He said he tried so many things to shake it off but it stuck. I had talked to mom last night and I think she really needs a lifting of her spirits. The world can get pretty heavy and the weight just continues to push down on her. Then when I spoke to Matt, the same feelings that mom was experienceing was being felt by Matt as well.
However by the end of the conversation, Matt said he was feeling a bit better, and I prayed that the night would not be endless and today would be a better day. I think the trigger was hearing that Matt would be moved to Parkridge Nursing Home within the week. Mom does not want Matt to go and is not sure what to do. Parkridge does have a step down rehab, but it is not as intense as City and we don't want Matt to lose what he has. We want him to continue to gain in strength and abilities. So prayers for God to show us the way. We are not sure what to pray for and this verse says it best. Romans 8:26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express".

Not too much to say tonight

Sorry about the late blog. The problem is I talked to Matt last night, had all the information written down, and now I can't find the paper!! My memory is so bad I can barely remember what Matt did. I know he was happy to have some company on Friday. Dad and him went outside to enjoy the wonderful weather (Friday or Saturday). +15 degrees but said it was cool in the shade. He laughs at dad because he watches over Matt like a mother hen, always asking if he is too cold, hungary, comfortable, etc.
Matt tried out the stepper machine on Friday and was able to do 30 secs by himself without the physio pushing down on his knees! Great job Matt, keep it up.
Watched Tv on Saturday, hockey and some of the Master's golf. His neck is very sore and it was hard to watch him last night. I just wanted to reach through the screen and rub his neck. I wasn't able to speak to him tonight so not sure how Sunday was for him. But no news is good news.
Hopefully with the week starting I will have more news tomorrow. Lekker slaap which means sleep well in Afrikaans. John is trying to teach me, but the going is rough! Jonmarie picks up up much quicker.

Making Pizza

I am having a difficult time choosing titles, because Matt is doing so much it is hard to pick just one.
Tuesday Matt settled back into the routine of work, work, work! He stood for 2 intervals, 5-6 minutes each time.He was happy when the fist time he stood, he didn't get dizzy. He wasn't able to take a step, but standing well. Matt aslo tried a new machine. It is like a stepper but when you are sitting down. His knees are bent at a 90 degree angle, and then he has to push down. The physio would help push on the top of his knee so he could get started. Had a harder time with the left, but that will come in time. Great exercise for increasing muscle strength in his quads. Matt was able to visit with Rocky and Barret. Paul Gustafson came by to visit and see how things were going.
Wednesday Matt had a shave and a haircut. Thank goodness he doesn't look like Rasputin anymore!! Wasn't feeling great though, has a really sore throat. However Matt persevered and stood up during exercises with lots of help. He even took 2 really good steps with his right foot. Didn't go far but it is better to have quality, not quantity. Continues to do all his arm exercises and stretches. Mom says if she takes the cap off a plastic bottle, and then puts it back on, Matt can remove it himself, so his fine motor skills are improving. Went to the mall for two hours. Didn't see anyone he knew but most of the students are busy with exams. When they returned, Matt was stuck in the van for 1/2 hours because the lift wouldn't work. Finally someone from physio came and tried a bunch of stuff. Finally the lift worked. Thank goodness it wasn't too cold outside.
This morning Matt was making pizza, so I am sure it was gone in record time. Had a visitor from Hudson Bay, a fellow who was in rehab and discharged in January. No swimming today, so hopefully next week. Matt was a little down tonight because mom had to go back to work. So we talked for over 40 minutes on Skype. Got to see the new haircut and shave. Matt states he feels naked now. Cool on the face.
Prayers for continued healing and more good things to come.

Back To Work

Well Matt is back at the hospital after a weekend in Weekes. Little bittersweet. It was a tough trip emotionally and physically. The ride is very bumpy and the weather wasn't great. His neck was sore all weekend and is feeling fresh pain after the trip back to Saskatoon. Wasn't able to have any rehab today becasue they didn't get back until the afternoon. Matt is visiting with a fellow patient who fractured his lower back and couldn't talk tonight.
I think Matt finds it hard to go back home. The reality is too much to take at times and he really wants to go downstairs to see his room, his things. Hopefully we can rig something up so next time he can get downstairs.
Matt made a few trips to the Golden Age to play crib. Dad had to push Matt in the small manual wheelchair to do this, because the way in is too narrow for the big cadillac. Matt had one small misshap. When taking him into the house from uptown, he slide out of the chair onto the floor. He is just too big for that little chair!! Good thing they were already in the house and quickly went and got the lift to get him back up.
Mom says when doing exercises this weekend, she saw a noticeable difference in the strength of his left arm. He can bend it more easily, and does it without thinking about it so much. It has a long way to go, but it is coming!! Most C-spine injuries have very little if no progress after 8 months post-injury, but Matt keeps blowing that theory out of the water! To get movement back in a limb so long after injury is just truly amazing and we Thank God everyday for each tiny miracle. So far to go yet, but we are more than half way there!
Please pray for continued healing and a rejuvanation of spirit to continue the battle. An uplifting of spirits is always welcome for anyone! psalms 51;10:12 "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."

New BIke

I am at work right now, and I forgot all Matt's information at home so I will try and wing it. (Don't worry, I am at John's office, he can't fire me!!)
Wednesday Matt was able to try out a new bike. I have seen them before on TV, especially on long bike races. They transfer Matt into it with the lift. He sits very low to the ground with his legs extended in front of him. The way he makes the bike move is with arm power. But the good thing is Matt has to use both arms to get it going, not just relying on his right arm. He did really well however he hasn't got the technique for turning yet and ran into a few walls!! He will use this machine once a week in the gym. They were also impressed how well he sat in the machine. Only needed a velcro strip.
Matt also did some standing exercises, trying to get those big clod hoppers to move. Needed lots of help but still progressing. Visited with Rocky and Barett. And sorry, but Matt did some more baking and there are no cookies left. They were gone in 5 minutes. Of course they were double chocolate chewy things so what did you expect? Matt did everything except measure the margarine, it was too hard from being in the freezer.
Thursday Matt had more visitors. Didn't have as much rehab today because he had a Dr's appt with the urologist. He was impressed by Matt's improvement and credits alot to the new meds he is on. Previously in December, Matt's bladder could only hold 100mls and would start to spasm. Now he can hold 300 mls. Occupational therapy consisted of playing Sorry, which Matt lost.
Today the troop should be going home for the weekend. Mom doesn't work so it should be much better. Will go the Golden Age to kick butt in crib and maybe get up to see grandma at the nursing home. It might be possible to use the standing machine there for Matt to practice but will have to see.
Tonight I will only be able to talk to Matt on the phone. I was really enjoying seeing him on the computer, but dial up at the farm just won't cut it!
